Sault College has disabled the spell check feature in all quizzes across our Brightspace (D2L) learning management system instance. This global setting ensures that assessments requiring accurate spelling are evaluated without automatic suggestions or corrections, allowing proper assessment of spelling as a learning outcome where needed.
For courses where correct spelling is not a graded component, the disabled spell check aligns well with instructional goals, as minor spelling variations will not affect grading. This default configuration meets the needs of the majority of courses.
However, in cases where spell check should be available, such as for accessibility accommodations or specific pedagogical requirements, instructors or authorized staff may submit a request through this service. Requests can be made to enable spell check for an entire course or for individual students. Enabling spell check for an entire course requires a different process than for specific students, so please specify your request type clearly in the ticket.
To ensure efficient processing, please include:
- Course code and Section Number (required for all requests).
If requesting spell check for one or more individual students (not the entire course), also provide:
- Student name(s) and Student number(s).
Who can request this service?
Instructors, Academic Assistants or Deans
When is this service available?
Available 24/7 via the TeamDynamix Service Portal, with processing during IT Service Desk business hours (Monday - Friday)
Before you request this service, you will need to...
- Determine if the request is for the entire course (class-wide) or for specific individual students. For class-wide requests, only course code and section number are needed, no student details. For individual student requests, include course details plus each student's name and number.
- Verify that spell check is genuinely required (e.g., for accessibility or non-spelling-focused assessments), as the default disabled setting supports most instructional needs.
Note to Requesters:
- Clearly indicate in the ticket whether this is a class-wide enablement (entire course) or for specific students. This helps IT process the request using the appropriate method.
- For individual student requests, list all relevant students with their names and numbers. Multiple students can be included in one ticket if they are in the same course.
- Enabling spell check may take effect after a short processing time; IT will confirm completion in the ticket.
- For any issues with Brightspace access or quiz settings unrelated to spell check, contact the IT Service Desk for assistance prior to submitting the ticket.
