LMS - Updating Course Dates (End/Start)

Overview

Faculty may request that students retain access to a course beyond its original end date. Course end dates must only be changed when directed by an authorized ticket.

When a course reaches its end date:

  • The course disappears from the student’s view
  • Students lose access to course materials
  • Faculty may report that “students can’t see the course anymore”

This article explains how to update a course end date using the Courses tool in Brightspace.

Instructions

1. Log into Brightspace

  • Go to welearn.saultcollege.ca and sign in.

Notice below what an Admin/Faculty would see if the course end date has ended.

2. Open the Courses Tool

  • Click the Cog Wheel (Settings) in the top‑right corner.
  • Select Courses.

3. Locate the Course and Open Course Offering Information

There are several ways to access the Course Information page. Any of the following methods are acceptable.

Method A — Using the Courses Tool

  • Open Settings (Cog Wheel)Courses.
  • Enter the Course Code or Course Name in the search field.
  • Click Search.
  • In the results list, click the linked course title.
    • This opens the Course Information page.
  • On the Course Information page, click Course Admin in the left‑hand menu.
  • In Course Admin, select Course Offering Information.
    • This is where the Start Date and End Date fields can be edited.

Method B — Using the Course Selector

  • Click the Course Selector (waffle icon) in the top navigation bar.
  • Search for or scroll to the course.
  • Click the course to enter it.
  • From inside the course, open Course Admin.
  • Select Course Offering Information.

Note: This method only works if you can enter the course. If the course is inactive or you lack access, use Method A or B.

4. Edit the Course End Date

  • Click Edit Course.
  • Scroll to Start Date & End Date.
  • Update the End Date to the new authorized date.
  • Set the time to 11:59 PM for consistency across all manually updated courses.
  • Click Save.

Why 11:59 PM? This ensures consistent behavior across all manually updated courses and makes it easy to visually confirm changes.

Important Notes

  • Only update end dates when directed by an authorized ticket.
  • Do not modify other course settings unless explicitly requested.
  • Do not bulk‑update multiple courses unless the ticket explicitly requires it.
  • If the requested date is unclear, confirm with the requester before making changes.

Completion

  • Once the end date is updated:
  • Students will regain access to the course
  • The course will reappear in their Brightspace course list
  • No further action is required unless additional changes are requested
