Suspicious, Spam, Phishing E-mail or False Positives - What to do!

Overview

Don't Panic, Don't CLICK

  • NEVER click on a link OR open an attachment. 
    Unless you are confident and trust the sender, and you expect that type of attachment.
  • NEVER REPLY to the sender.
  • NEVER FORWARD the email.
  • It's safe to see the Preview of the e-mail. Use this to verify that it is "suspicious".
  • Report the message by using your Outlook mail (Follow instructions below)

IMPORTANT: 
I
f you clicked on a link or followed through on any authentication process, prior to realizing the email was suspicious:
1. Report the message to Microsoft (See instructions below - Reporting a Message to Microsoft)
2. Notify the IT Service Desk IMMEDIATELY - Extension 2504
3. Change Your Password. This will help ensure that you are the only one who can access your account.

 

Reporting a Message to Microsoft (Outlook Web Version)

  1. Select the identified email but don’t click on any links.
    Click the icon called Report Message, in the top right hand corner of the email.


  2. Now choose what you have identified the email message to be, such as Phishing. â€‹
    1. Phishing
    2. Junk
  3. Click Report to finish sending to Microsoft 
 

Reporting a Message to Microsoft (Outlook Desktop Client)

  1. Select the identified email, but don’t click on any links, on the right hand corner in the ribbon bar, click Report Message.
  2. Now choose what you have identified the email message to be, such as "Phishing".   


     Click Report to finish sending to Microsoft.

NOTE: You can use these instructions on an email that has been filtered to your Junk Mail folder and click Not JunkUploaded Image (Thumbnail)

How to contact the IT Service Desk

Call the IT Service Desk at 705-759-2554 ext 2504 or use TeamDynamix ticket system.
Let IT Service Desk know "What happened". 
  • Did you click to open the email?
  • Did you open an Attachment?
  • Did you get to a web page and then stop? Did you enter your information?
  • Did you run some software or an application? 
  • Did you go through an authentication process - logging in to the clicked location?

It is good practice to periodically change your password. You change your password using your Old Password and then enter your desired New Password.
