Setting up MFA after receiving a new computer

Overview

If you have received a new laptop and MFA has been enabled at the same time you will be required to configure MFA during the initial log on of the computer.  Windows will guide you through the process.  Below is a guide to each screen.

Instructions

Once you turn your new device on you will be greeted with a Welcome Screen

Enter your username@saultcollege.ca
Click Next

Note: Usernames are your first intial + your last name.  I.E. tsmith@saultcollege.ca

On the next screen, enter your Sault College Password
Click Next

You will then be informed that Your Admin has required that you set up this account for additional security verification on the next screen.  You will only see this screen if MFA has been enabled on your account and you are receiving a new computer at the same time.  This should be a rare event.

Click Set it up now

 

MFA Method 1 of 2

This next step involves installing an Application on your Smart Phone call Microsoft Authenticator.  This app can be used for other Services you may be registered for like your personal Microsoft account or other 3rd party apps such as BitWarden (password manager).

On your phone you can either navigate to https://aka.ms/getMicrosoftAuthenticator or goto the AppStore and search for Microsoft Authenticator (be careful of look a like programs)

Once you've installed this app click Next

NOTE: Sault College only supports the Microsoft Authenticator App, however, other Authenticators app do work but don't provide pop ups on your phone making the sign in process more difficult.

On the next screen click Next

You will now be presented with a QR code that you can scan with your Microsoft Authenticator app

Using your phone, open the Microsoft Authenticator App.  You can see from the image below that LIVE.CA and Bitwarden are already being used with this app.
Click the Plus (+) sign in the top right hand corner.

Next, Choose Work or School account >

Click Scan QR code

Move the green box over the QR code to scan

Now you will see that Sault College has been added to the Microsoft Authenticator app successfully.  You are now ready to start using Sault College MFA

Using MFA

Still in the First Run experience, Microsoft will require you to use MFA for the first time.
You will be prompted on your phone's Authenticator App to Enter the number shown to sign in and you will receive that number on your computer monitor.

Your first MFA method has now been approved.
Click Next to move onto the 2nd method

NOTE: We are only discussing these 2 MFA options but a few other options are available.

If you have a smart phone we recommend you choose Text me a code
Click Next

On your phone your will receive a Verification Code

Enter the code 

Click Next
You will now notice that your second method for MFA has been registered

Method 2 of 2: Done
Click Done

Using MFA for the first time

Windows will now require you to use this new MFA setup for the first time

Enter your password
Click Next

Windows will start guiding you


You should get an Auto popup on your Smart Phone
Click Approve sign-in?

Enter the Code provided in Windows.  In this demonstration it's 70 but your number will be different.
Click Yes

If MFA setup worked as expect, Windows will now complete the initial setup configuration.

NOTE: The final setup will take a bit of time to complete.

The last stage of the setup if to, again, login using the MFA.
Once your receive the All set! screen
Click Finish

On Your Smart Phone tap Approve sign-in?

On the next screen on your smart phone click Approve to get logged on
