Overview
When updating files in the LMS using the New Content Experience (NCE), dragging and dropping a file from a computer into a module will always create a new content item, even if the file name is the same. The LMS does not recognize drag‑and‑drop uploads as replacements because files and content topics are tracked by internal system IDs, not by file name.
As a result, drag‑and‑drop uploads will not preserve existing settings, including:
- Release conditions
- Availability start and end dates
- Required or completion tracking flags
- Visibility rules
To ensure these settings remain intact, files must be replaced through the existing content topic or overwritten in Manage Files.
Before You Begin
- Confirm which content item needs to be updated
- Ensure you have the finalized version of the file
- Do not use drag‑and‑drop unless you intend to create new content
